GS1 Standards Explained: GTIN, GDSN, GPC, and How They Fit into a PIM

If you work with product data at a retailer, an e-commerce company, or a manufacturer, you run into the acronyms GS1, GTIN, GDSN, and GPC constantly. This guide breaks down what each of them means, how they relate to each other, and which parts actually matter when you build a product catalog.

What is GS1

GS1 is an international non-profit organization that develops and maintains standards for identifying products, companies, and logistics units. Its most famous product is one everybody knows: the barcode on the package. But the barcode is only a visual representation. Behind it sits an entire system of identifiers and data exchange formats.

National GS1 member organizations operate in more than 110 countries. A company joins its national GS1 organization, receives a company prefix, and issues identifiers for its products and locations based on that prefix.

What is a GTIN and how it differs from a barcode

A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the globally unique identifier of a specific trade item in a specific configuration. The barcode on the package encodes the GTIN.

Three points that are commonly confused:

First, a GTIN is assigned at the level of a trade item, not a product model. The same shampoo in a 250 ml bottle and a 400 ml bottle carries two different GTINs. The same applies to colors, flavors, and bundle configurations.

Second, GTINs come in different lengths: GTIN-12 (the UPC used in the US and Canada), GTIN-13 (the EAN standard in Europe and most of the world), GTIN-8 (small packages), and GTIN-14 (case and pallet level units).

Third, a GTIN identifies a product but does not describe it. The name, ingredients, photos, and specifications are not encoded in the number itself. They have to be stored and exchanged separately, which is exactly what catalogs, PIM systems, and data synchronization networks exist for.

GTIN vs UPC vs EAN

A frequent point of confusion for US teams. UPC (UPC-A) is the 12-digit barcode format standard in North America, and the number it encodes is a GTIN-12. EAN-13 is the 13-digit format used in Europe and most other markets, encoding a GTIN-13. Any UPC can be represented as a GTIN-13 by adding a leading zero. In short: GTIN is the number, UPC and EAN are barcode formats that carry it. Marketplaces like Amazon ask for a "Product ID" (UPC/EAN/GTIN), and all of these resolve to the same identification system.

Packaging hierarchy: each, inner pack, case, pallet

In GS1 standards a product exists not as a single record but as a hierarchy of trade units. A typical chain looks like this: consumer unit (a bottle), inner pack (a shrink-wrap of 6), case (4 inner packs), pallet.

Each level gets its own GTIN, and links between levels describe nesting and quantities. For retail and logistics this is critical: orders are placed in cases, receiving happens in pallets, sales happen in eaches. If your data does not model the hierarchy, integrations with retail chains and distributors start producing mismatches in inventory and ordering.

In a PIM, the packaging hierarchy should be a first-class entity with its own attributes at every level: gross and net weight, dimensions, child quantities. A flat "one product, one row" table cannot carry this.

A practical nuance worth knowing. GTIN-14 with an indicator digit applies only to levels that never cross the checkout. If an intermediate pack is itself sold at retail as a standalone item, it gets its own GTIN-13, not a GTIN-14. The classic example is bottled water in a 24-bottle shrink-wrap: shoppers buy that pack off the shelf as a product in its own right, so it carries its own GTIN-13, even though it simultaneously serves as the transport case in logistics. The rule of thumb: sold to the end shopper, GTIN-13; moves only through the supply chain, GTIN-14.

What is GPC classification

GPC (Global Product Classification) is the GS1 global product classification system. It organizes all products into a tree: segment, family, class, and brick. The brick is the working level of classification, and attribute sets typical for that product type are attached to it.

Why it matters in practice: when a manufacturer and a retailer exchange data, the GPC code lets both sides interpret the product the same way and know which attributes are mandatory for it. Many retail chains and platforms require a GPC code at item setup, and listing validation depends on the category.

What is GDSN and how data synchronization works

GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network) is the global network for exchanging product master data, built on GS1 standards. It works like this: a manufacturer uploads product data to one of the certified data pools, a retailer subscribes to the GTINs it needs through its own pool, and updates are delivered automatically. The network connects 44 certified data pools; the largest operators are 1WorldSync and Syndigo.

What travels through GDSN is primarily logistics and regulatory master data: identifiers, dimensions, weights, packaging hierarchies, shelf life, certifications. Storefront content (marketing copy, image sets, filter attributes) is formally supported by the standard but poorly covered in practice. How GS1 standards map onto a PIM system

A practical checklist for anyone building a catalog:

  1. GTIN as a key attribute. Unique, validated by check digit, mandatory for products going into retail. It is the key that matches your record to every external system.
  2. Packaging hierarchy as a dedicated model. Nesting levels, each with its own GTIN and logistics attributes.
  3. GPC code on the record. Classification against the global tree, which drives the sets of mandatory attributes.
  4. Standardized units of measure. Weight, volume, and dimensions in agreed units, not "16oz" buried in the product name as a string.
  5. Separation of master data and storefront content. Logistics lives by GS1 rules; content (photos, copy, filter attributes) is managed in its own loop and syndicated into channels from a single source.

Frequently asked questions

Are GTIN and UPC the same thing? Almost. UPC is the 12-digit barcode format used in North America, and the number inside it is a GTIN-12. GTIN is the identifier, UPC is one of the formats that carries it.

Can I sell without a GTIN? On your own website, yes. On marketplaces and in retail chains it depends on the category and platform. Amazon requires a Product ID for most categories, and a valid GTIN makes item setup smoother everywhere.

Do I have to connect to GDSN? No. GDSN is needed when your trading partners receive data through data pools, which mostly means large chain retail. For direct-to-consumer and marketplace selling, correct GTINs and a high-quality listing are enough.

What is the difference between a PIM and a data pool? A data pool is transport: it moves standardized master data between companies. A PIM is your internal system for managing all product data, including the content that never travels through data pools. They complement each other rather than compete.
